NICHOLAS KIRKWOOD is opening his debut standalone store in London's Mayfair this Friday."I've been working with a number of other stores since I started, and it felt like the right time to branch out on my own," Kirkwood tells us. "As a shoe company, we are not able to do our own show. It has given me the opportunity to provide my own environment for the shoes."
Situated on Mount Street close to Christian Louboutin and Marc Jacobs, and housed in a grade-two listed building, the designer says he couldn't have asked for a better spot.
"This is definitely an extremely ideal location, we were extremely lucky that this spot became available," he admits. "We had been looking around for a while and walked passed one day, saw the empty space and pursued it from there. We also brought in a number of people to help us with the interior, like artist Richard Woods for the flooring, and a friend of mine who is an architect to help us realise the shop."
The store will carry the label's spring/summer 2011 collection, as well as its collaboration with renowned jewellery brand Swarovski - keys, rings and earrings covered in glittering crystals. Kirkwood, who was this year shortlisted for the Vogue/BFC Fashion Fund prize, is looking forward to the reaping the benefits of opening his first shop.
"It will definitely give our label a presence, it will also allow us to learn a lot about our product directly from the customers," he explains. "I think this will help us in future development of the collection.
This will be the first of many Kirkwood stores, as the designer plans international expansion.
"We're currently looking at spaces in New York to hopefully open in the beginning of 2012," he says. "We are also looking into potential partners in Hong Kong and Dubai."
